Equine Pre-Purchase Exams

Purchasing a horse is a significant investment. For that reason, we strongly recommend a thorough pre-purchase exam, conducted by one of the highly skilled veterinarians at TFB Equine, for any horse you are considering buying.

The physical examination for a pre-purchase exam includes listening to the heart, lungs, gastrointestinal sounds, taking a temperature, and examining the eyes and oral cavity. The veterinarian also performs a lameness evaluation, which involves examining the horse at trot in a circle and straight line plus flexion tests. Flexion tests involve flexing different joints and observing the horse at trot to see if any lameness is elicited that may indicate a joint problem.

You may also choose to have radiographs (X-rays), blood work, drug testing, endoscopic examinations, or reproductive examinations performed. We are happy to customize your horse's examination to address your concerns and expectations.

It is important to understand that there are limits to what can be determined by the examination. For example, future soundness or athletic ability of the horse cannot be guaranteed. Nonetheless, an equine pre-purchase examination can be invaluable in helping you with your final decision. The cost of the exam is small when compared to the cost of caring for a horse that is unable to meet your expectations.
